Boichik Bagels
founder Emily Winston · Berkeley · since 2019
New York-style bagels, spreads and lox for a proper morning.
the founder story
A true New York bagel, perfected in the Bay Area by founder Emily Winston. A former UC Davis transportation engineer, Emily chased the taste of Manhattan's legendary H&H Bagels for years, baking test batches, running blind tastings with friends and selling from pop-ups in front of her Alameda home. In 2019 she opened Boichik in Berkeley, in the former College Avenue flagship of Noah's New York Bagels, and the New York Times soon declared "California has the best bagels (Sorry, New York)." The name blends the Yiddish "boychik" with "boi," a nod to Emily's Jewish heritage and queer identity. Today about fifteen bagel flavors, house-made schmears and silky lox travel from Boichik's Santa Clara shop to bring a proper, energizing New York morning to Silicon Valley teams.
